As of today, we have 410 Active dedicated members. You’ve enabled us to keep the Foundation as a high profile not-for-profit organization that serves our community not only in the education of Americana Music, but by bringing together a community of people who are dedicated to keeping the Americana Music genre growing by leaps and bounds.
We would like to thank all of you by hosting our 2nd annual Membership Appreciation event at the Flying Bison Brewing Company: Same theme as last year: Beer and Chocolate – what’s not to like! Active and Renewing Members receive two beer tickets, chocolate and snacks. Another objective to this event is bringing in new members to sign up. So bring your friends and family!! If they become members, they will receive the same perks. Below is our Save the Date Notice.
Call for volunteers: We need about 16 people for this event – short 1.5 hour shifts for various stations. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to volunteer.
As always, thanks so much for your support and dedication!

We hope all our members are starting off 2018 with love and peace in your life. And for many of us, that’s where music comes in as one of the key components in making for a happy life. I hope to see all of you out there this year supporting live music in WNY. There is so much going on, you could go out every single day to see some great music at a wide variety of venues. The next Foundation shows will be some great music at our Beer and Chocolate membership drive on February 12th at Flying Bison Brewery and our fourth annual SzelestFest at the Sportsmen’s Tavern on March 11th. Beyond that, we’re working on SAM Foundation/Kentucky Derby day at Flying Bison. Also, we’re meeting this month to plan our budget and activities for 2018, so you’ll be hearing more in the near future.
THANK YOU TO BOBBY LEBEL
On December 8th, 2017 at The Tralf, Bobby Lebel put on the Musicians of Buffalo Christmas show. It was a great show with a big crowd and many musical guests, including Billy Sheehan, Jesse Galante, Talas, Carina and the Six String Preacher, Phil Sims’ Jazz Orchestra, Bobby Lebel’s Orchestra, Mick Hayes, Rishon Odel Northington, Donna Kerr, Lucy Bell and more. The party was designed as a fundraiser for the SAM Foundation. After the show, Bobby Lebel donated $5,000 to the Foundation. The Board and the members of the SAM Foundation are incredibly appreciative of the efforts of Bobby and all the musicians. This is what helps pay for all the programs Don Nelson is telling you about in his article in this JAM.

Sportsmen’s Americana Music Foundation Educational Program Update
We are very pleased to report that 2017 saw the significant expansion of The Foundation’s educational activities. Launching Six multi-session youth workshops and one half day youth workshop, The Foundation provided young Western New Yorkers with close to 1,000 hours of musical instrument and vocal lessons (on an individualized basis) from some of the most talented, award winning artists and instructors in the region. Joining our instructional team in 2017 were Helen Butler Ceppaglia who headed up a terrific summer program at the Old First Ward Community center, The multi-talented Bobby Lebel, lead a group of enthusiastic adults in a highly entertaining ten week program, and last but certainly not least, Doug Yeomans launched an Americana music appreciation summer program at the Boys and Girls Club in Holland NY, capping it off with a very entertaining and fun recital for family members and staff.
Helen, Bobby and Doug have been great additions to a phenomenal team of instructors that has included Katie Clark, Mark Panfil, Alan Whitney, Tim Pitcher and Jim Brucato all of whom will be entering into their 3rd year of making a difference and enriching the lives of Kids throughout the region.
As we’re well on our way into 2018 the goal of the Foundation is to keep our educational activities going and growing. The Foundation looks forward to working with new partners and will be looking at launching new educational programs. To that end, we have established a relationship with The Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo and are planning to launch a program with them sometime this winter.
As for new programs, we will be kicking off the first ever, 10 week ukulele workshop at the Holland Boys and Girls Club. Led by Doug Yeomans, we expect that we’ll be following up with a date for the session ending recital that should take place sometime in late April early May. We’ll keep you posted!
In addition to new endeavors we’re already set to kick off the popular Americana music appreciation program with Katie Clark at the Valley Community Center. And we’re very pleased that once again, Tim and Alan will be leading the kids at I-prep in their Rock ‘n roll workshop this spring. Last spring Tim and Alan’s Rocker’s performed at the Buffalo public multi-school talent show in late May; the first time ever since its inception a decade ago that a band performed at the popular event.
For more details on The Foundation’s educational programs and instructors, be sure to stop by the Merch store and pick up one of the Educational Initiative’s brochures that are hot off the press.
